Welcome to Nepean Skating Club "Beginner STARSkate"
FOCUS
The focus of Beginner STARSkate
is to build on skills started in Canskate:
- Skating
Skills
- Jumps
- Spins
- Dance
Skaters
will also learn new skills which are helpful and important in skating:
- Stroking
- Stretching
- Ice
etiquette
BEGINNER STARSKATE prerequisite:
- Passed Stage
4 or higher in the Canskate Program.
- Recommendation
from Canskate coordinator or Site supervisor.
CLASS STRUCTURE
Classes are generally 50 minutes in length; some sessions have a stroking class
available before. On all sessions there is a group program assistant that the
skaters can use as a home base while not in private lessons. Private lessons
will be where the skater learns the techniques for specific elements like
jumps and spins, and the basics of stroking, edges and posture for figure
skating.
PRIVATE LESSONS
Private lessons are arranged directly with a coach. It is up to the parent to
contact a coach for private lessons; the program coordinator can be reached
through the club office if assistance is needed. There is a profile for each
of the Nepean Skating Club Coaches, with their
respective fees, on the club web site or available in the club office.
When
choosing a coach, some of the things to look for are; the personality of the
coach and their teaching qualifications. Visiting the rink to observe coaches
while they teach can help determine their teaching style. Qualifications to
consider are; education, personal experience, NCCP rating, and number of years
coaching.
